Fitness Assessments
What is a Fitness Assessment?

A Fitness Assessment is a comprehensive evaluation
of your current level of physical fitness, as
determined by assessing each of the five fitness
components: Cardiorespiratory Endurance, Muscular
Strength, Muscular Endurance, Flexibility, and Body
Composition.
Why Should You Have a Fitness Assessment?

Fitness is more than just a matter of losing weight!
It includes objective evaluations of several different
areas of physical fitness.

Imagine being able to look back at your original
fitness assessment and see not just how much
weight you lost, but also how many inches you lost,
or how much your body fat has been reduced, or
how much strength you've gained! Improvements in
fitness are directly related to improvements in
overall health!

PLUS, your
Abundant Life Personal Trainer can
evaluate the results of your assessment and apply
this information to the development of a safe,
effective, individualized exercise plan!
3. Muscular Endurance:
Muscular endurance is determined
by counting the number of either
push-ups or sit-ups executed in
one minute.

4. Flexibility: Two tests of
flexibility are administered to
measure both shoulder and trunk
flexibility.
5. Body Composition: This
group of assessments includes
measurements of BMI (Body Mass
Index), body fat, overall weight,
lean vs. fat weight, body
measurements, and calculation of
a waist-to-hip ratio.
The assessment usually takes approximately 45 minutes to one hour. Following your fitness
assessment, your trainer will compare your results to norms generated by the
American College
of Sports Medicine
(ACSM), according to your gender, age, and height (where applicable). An
individualized report will then be created which explains and interprets the results of your fitness
assessment. If additional
Abundant Life services are purchased, the results of this assessment
can help provide the basis for a very safe and effective fitness experience! Ideally, the
assessment should be repeated every six to twelve weeks.
What Should I Expect During My Fitness Assessment?
Prior to your appointment, your trainer will go over the Pre-Fitness Assessment
Instructions with you. (See more links to our forms at the bottom of this page.)
At the session, the trainer will first conduct a health history, and request
permission from your physician to conduct the fitness assessment (if needed).
Next, several physiological readings are taken, including resting heart rate and
blood pressure. Then,
each of the five components of physical fitness is
assessed:

Endurance
: The YMCA
3-Minute Step Test
is utilized in
this measurement of heart and
lung efficiency during mild to
moderate exertion.

2. Muscular Strength: A grip
strength device called a
dynamometer is used in this
test, to estimate strength and
muscle balance on the right and
left sides of the upper body.
